Why we
Celebrate
Historical societies throughout central New Hampshire are celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary to honor the birth of the United States and the local people and places that helped shape it. The semiquincentennial, marking 250 years, is an opportunity to reflect on how small towns and ordinary citizens contributed to extraordinary events that led to independence and self-government.

The anniversary centers on the Declaration of Independence in 1776, when the thirteen colonies formally asserted their freedom from British rule. Communities across New Hampshire were deeply involved in this struggle, supplying soldiers, leaders, resources, and ideas that fueled the Revolutionary War and supported the fight for liberty.

By commemorating the Revolutionary era, historical societies highlight how national history unfolded at the local level. Through exhibits, programs, and education, they connect today’s residents with the ideals, sacrifices, and civic spirit that defined the nation’s founding and continue to shape American life 250 years later.
