Springfield

Springfield, located in the northeast corner of Sullivan County, New Hampshire, had a population of 1,259 at the 2020 census and is home to Gile State Forest. First settled in 1769 as "Protectworth," the town was incorporated as "Springfield" in 1794. Originally part of Cheshire County, it became part of Sullivan County in 1827.

The town covers 44.5 square miles, with 43.6 square miles of land and just under 1 square mile of water. Springfield’s landscape is defined by several watersheds: the northwest drains to the Sugar River and Connecticut River, the southeast flows to Lake Sunapee, and the northeast reaches the Blackwater and Merrimack Rivers, shaping both the town’s natural beauty and its early settlement patterns.
